The first project area is a subcatchment of the Dutch Waterboard Noorderzijlvest in Groningen, The Netherlands. Their catchment is located in the north-east of the Netherlands.
Location of the project area
The image below shows the entire area that's being controlled by the Waterboard Noorderzijlvest. Our project area roughly involves the triangle south of Peize.
Hydrological characteristics
The water flows from the south to the north. In the southern horizontal canal, the water level is kept at a constant value of 10.40 m A.D. This is accomplished through an inlet near Huis Ter Heide, in the south-east corner. In the northern part of our project area (Peize), the water level is kept at -0.93 m A.D. This is accomplished through a series of pump stations in the north-west corner of the catchment, where the water is being pumped towards the lake near Lauwersoog.
In other words: towards Peize, the water flows freely under gravity. From Peize onwards, it is being controlled by large pumping stations.
